Phaetus aeFlex TPU-85A-HF — soft 85A flexible, built for speed
A Shore 85A flexible TPU in Phaetus's high-flow (HF) grade. It's noticeably softer and more rubbery than the 90A/95A TPUs most people start with, but the HF formulation is tuned to keep flowing at speed — Phaetus rates it for over 100 mm/s when paired with a capable direct-drive extruder. Good for gaskets, seals, grommets, vibration dampers, protective cases, RC tires, and any squishy functional part.
What it prints well
- Soft, grippy, high-elongation parts that need to bend and bounce back.
- Faster than typical soft TPU thanks to the high-flow grade — you don't have to crawl at 15 mm/s.
- Layer bonding and surface finish are good in the 85A-HF class when dry and run at moderate retraction.
Hardware you need
- Direct-drive extruder strongly recommended. 85A is soft enough that it buckles and jams in most Bowden setups. A short, well-constrained filament path matters more than raw temperature.
- No hardened nozzle needed. This is unfilled TPU — no glass or carbon fiber — so a standard brass nozzle is fine. (Only our glass/carbon-filled engineering lines need a hardened or DLC nozzle.)
- Heated bed helpful but gentle; smooth PEI or a glue stick gives clean release.
Temperatures (start here, then dial in)
- Nozzle: ~200-225C
- Bed: ~20-50C
- Density: ~1.16 g/cm3
These are typical values for the 85A high-flow TPU class. Confirm against Phaetus's published TDS for this exact spool and tune in 5C steps.
Drying — do not skip this
TPU is hygroscopic and re-absorbs moisture fast. Wet filament prints stringy, rough, and weak. Dry before use: ~50-65C for 4-6h (or 70C for ~7h) in a filament dryer or oven, then print straight from a dry box or reseal with desiccant. If a spool has been open on the shelf, dry it first — every time.
